Thrilling Tchaikovsky
Lawrence Leighton Smith, Conductor
Miriam Fried, Violin
Mendelssohn: Calm Sea And
Prosperous Voyage
Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto
Brahms: Symphony No. 3
World-renowned violinist Miriam Fried performs Tchaikovsky’s thrilling Violin Concerto!
Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto is one of the most loved violin concertos ever written. Apart from delighting audiences since its first performance, it has also enchanted, enraptured and enraged violinists with its emotional, straight-to-the-heart music that often masks the need for a formidable technique. It is one of the giants of the violin repertoire that only the best-of-the-best can pull off.
Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage is an overture based on two poems by the German writer Goethe from which the piece gets its title. While listening to this music it is interesting to keep in mind that Mendelssohn had never as much as set foot on a boat and therefore all the more re markable the composer is able to capture the atmosphere of rolling waves and salty sea breezes with striking clarity.
Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 has romantic rhythms in a masterpiece worthy of adulation. The symphony is a perfect example of Brahms's mastery of material, and variety of rhythms, and its nature is very romantic with a background of mountain, sky and singing winds and the finale is energetic and magnificent.
Concert in tribute to retiring Executive Director Susan S. Greene
