The 2008 Colorado Springs Philharmonic Young People’s Concerts for school children will feature the local premier of a new piece created especially for kids.
Steve Barta’s “Jumpin Jazz” is a fresh, fun and completely original composition which introduces young people to Jazz. The piece uses characters, humor and a storyline to familiarize kids with Jazz concepts, legendary Jazz musicians and history. Barta and his trio will join the Colorado Springs Philharmonic for this special project and will also perform a selection of Depression-era Jazz pieces associated with the Pikes Peak Library District’s “All Pikes Peak Reads” program, focusing on books relating to the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl Era such as Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath, The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan, Dust For Dinner by Ann Turner and Children of the Dust Bowl by Jerry Stanley.

The Pikes Peak Music Volunteers offer the “Listen Up” docent program for 4th 5th and 6th grade classes. The docents are trained by Maestro Thomas Wilson, bring their own materials, and are provided at no additional cost. Evaluations have shown that a pre-concert docent visit greatly enhances students’ understanding and enjoyment of the concert.
